Finally, a road map to recovery from the nation's most original thinker on addiction.

In his revolutionary book The Heart of Addiction, Dr. Lance Dodes examined the underlying emotions that drive addictive behaviors - whether drinking, gambling, sex, or eating. Now, in Breaking Addiction, Dodes presents a comprehensive guide outlining seven critical steps to overcome addiction, based on his findings.

hrough his practice and research, Dodes has found that virtually every addictive act is preceded by feelings of helplessness. In his refreshingly clear style, Dodes incorporates case histories to illustrate exactly how these feelings set addiction in motion, how to recognize the path toward addiction and then how to take back control.

Many people, discouraged by current treatments, have been hungry for an approach that digs addiction up by its roots. Since the publication of The Heart of Addiction, Dodes's ideas have been incorporated by therapists and treatment centers around the country, and are taught by universities and training centers for clinicians.

With special sections for both families and health-care professionals, Breaking Addiction is poised to be the handbook for a new, comprehensive, and in-depth understanding of addiction.

Breaking Addiction A 7Step Handbook for Ending Any Addiction (Audible Audio Edition) Lance M Dodes John Meagher HarperAudio Books

I've dealt with food addiction for 70 years. The year my mom's illness meant I became her primary caretaker at age 5 through the age of 16 when my father raped me, then died in my arms in a fall three years later. With all the therapy I've had to bring me to forgiveness, none has put this life experience together with my food addiction so clearly as this book has. Recognizing the feelings of helplessness and abandonment BEFORE asking myself "What can I eat?" makes so much sense. I've been able to put into practice right away. Thank you.

Breaking Addiction A 7Step Handbook for Ending Any Addiction (Audible Audio Edition) Lance M Dodes John Meagher HarperAudio Books Reviews

I have been reading in this field for a long time and have deep regret I missed The Heart of Addiction and this workbook until just recently. It is the first treatment model I have encountered that makes absolute sense, is clearly and intelligently written AND gives the addict a healthy focus on figuring out why he or she has an addiction, and RESOLVING it.
I feel this gave a practical viewpoint of addiction and I enjoyed the stories tied within. I shared this book with my wife and am looking forward to hearing her perspective too
Dr. Dodes provides amazing insight into the root cause of addictions. He provides several examples to the reader to illustrate his concepts as he takes you through the 7 steps. The last section in the book is intended for therapists. I'm not a therapist but I'm finding this of great interest also. This book will be helpful for anyone who wants to understand why they turn to addictive behaviors and how to overcome them.
I read his earlier book first and it caused me to check out his newer second book with the 7 steps toward breaking addiction. I have friends and family with addiction problems and never really understood that element of helplessness that these people experience in their addictions. It was definitely a new way for me to look at how they "re-direct" their frustration in what has to be an incredible mental and emotional prison in which they find themselves. My purpose in reading the two books was to learn how to be supportive of those close to me without judging them and to see what the author has learned in dealing with these wide and varied addictions....that there are productive ways with which to deal with these invisible chains. It was hopeful to read his studies and about others who have worked on ways to get that control back in their lives.
Breaking Addiction gives real world examples to illustrate the common driver of addictive behavior. The book helps to explain that addiction is not the result of moral weakness or organic brain disease; rather, emotional despair drives the addiction. Once the source of the addict's emotional despair is determined, the person with addiction can identify the key moment and choose direct action to avoid the feelings of helplessness that cause them to turn to alcohol, drugs, gambling, etc. This book gives hope for sustainable recovery for anyone with an addiction and spouses, parents, siblings, and children of anyone with an addiction. Dr. Dodes provides concrete steps that can be taken to counter addictive behavior. This book would be especially helpful where the person with an addiction has been resistant to the 12-step porgram or other treatments.
This book really resonated with me. I've been struggling with a pornography addiction for years and I was making headway but I just didn't seem to find any understanding to how I could really practice a more enduring and lasting strategy. The book hit the nail right on the head in that I act out as a result of feelings of helplessness. I would have panic attacks afterwards from my shame and really be enraged at my circumstance. The issue is that my main trigger is my father who speaks very aggressively and harshly to me. I am not financially independent yet and so I become entrenched in feelings of helplessness. The point is, I wasn't able to see my behaviour with this much clarity before, it's wonderful to be able to understand in a really clear way the mechanics of triggers. Then Lance show you how you can find short term behaviours to engage in instead to regain your sense of power. It's a lovey book and will really help you pull yourself out of addiction very crisply.
Very informative. Scientific and caring-toned. Real methods for dealing with triggers, urges, and helplessness. Author makes the non argument that addiction is an addictive behavior rather than a disease of the mind. And rather than purely praying, provides ways to deal with the difficulties of daily life. Not geared towards one specific kind of addiction or substance. Food, sex, gambling, cocaine, heroin and alcohol are all keys here for understanding how to manage your addictive behaviors. And states that it is not the addicts fault, it is tantamount to being trapped in a cave and breaking ones wrist in an attempt to free oneself from the situation. Very lucid, kind and generous. Highly recommended.
