As the best man in a wedding, John Saxon first saw—and fell in love with—Mary Elizabeth Wainwright as she preceded the bride down the aisle. When he returns home, John pours his adoration for Mary Elizabeth into a letter and asks her to marry him. Mary Elizabeth is not the woman John assumes her to be. She is from great wealth and privilege beyond John’s reach as a student of medicine who has to make his own way in the world. Though there is obviously attraction on both their parts it will take a miracle to bring them together on worldviews and faith.

The Strange Proposal Love Endures edition by Grace Livingston Hill Religion Spirituality eBooks

If you've read 'White Orchids' then you'll feel right at home with some of the characters in this story. This time, the heroine is beautiful Mary Elizabeth Wainwright who falls in love with an upcoming but poor physician John Saxon, who also helps his parents with their struggling orange grove in Florida. John is friends with Jeff Wainwright, the hero from 'White Orchids' who married the lovely 'working girl' Camilla Chrystie. You'll find yourself breathless with suspense as John's mother battles for her life in the steamy Florida heat as John himself battles against falling desperately in love with the beautiful heiress, Mary Elizabeth. There are also many comedic passages to make you chuckle aloud, thanks to an obnoxious would-be suitor who vainly chases Mary Elizabeth but is foiled again and again thanks to the trickster efforts of young Sam Wainwright, an impish, crafty boy who is the young brother of Jeff Wainwright. Happy reading!!!!

The Strange Proposal Love Endures edition by Grace Livingston Hill Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

I have always loved Grace Livingston Hill's books, and this one is no exception.

The story is a bit different from her other ones in that the female lead is very wealthy and the male lead is not. Usually, that is reversed.

The characters of Mary Elizabeth and her family are, imo, very well fleshed out and interesting.

The Saxon's family is not fleshed out as well, but still are very good.
this was a very good book. I love the way it started and it just got better. I really liked the way the heroine was so likeable and so real. Her female heroines are usually so likeable. I was surprised that this was released before 'white Orchids which was the perfect lead to the book as it was the first romance before the wedding which set this up.
I loved this book and would highly reccomend it to anyone.
All three of these stories are really great. If you have trouble holding a big book this wouldn't be the way to get these three stories. On the other hand, if you want the best possible price AND have had trouble finding these stories individually printed, this is a really great buy.
I'm a big Grace Livingston Hill fan, and this one is another delight. It is a Christian romance, yet, unlike her others, sweetly sexy. While thinking about his love-at-first-sight lady, the hero also expresses some real, human desire for her. Just the kind of think most women would like to hear from their men. I also liked the heroines tough decision that this is the man she wants (if she's worthy of him), and not some rich schlump.
Love this book and love this author. I have read many of her books and love them all. They are period pieces now, but she was a contemporary author when they were new- so all the language and slang is right on the money. All of her stories just seem to take me to that dreamy place where all is right with the world. I recommend not only this book but all of her's to any one who will listen.
Grace Livingston Hill is a storyteller of life. Though I often feel there is too much emphasis on rich and poor, her original audience was from war time and depression.

My favorite stories are those where a child is a major part of the storyline, as in The Strange Proposal. I am so tired of Disney and Nikolodeon trying to convince children that all adults are stupid. Mrs. Hill's books show children working with and cherishing the adults in their lives, often influencing the final outcome, but never driving the tale.

People fall in love way too quickly in these romances. However, the essential theme is God first, and what He brings to us second.

The Strange Proposal is one of my favorite books, telling the story of one family helping another with eternal consequences. It's nice to imagine people who care so much that they would move aside everything in their own lives to change the outcome of another's life.
This book reminded me a little of The Story of a Whim-only for the Florida tie FYI. I like that one too. I won't write a full review since there seems to be one already but what I liked best about this is the beautiful letter Mary Elizabeth wrote to John. It by itself was worth the price of the book. I loved the way Mary Elizabeth saw John Saxon's Christ in him and around him. Also liked the character of Sam and how Mary really got to know John through him and even to know Christ through the boy. It is weak as a romance only in that it is love at first sight and then a wedding at the end without any real interaction in the book but shows Grace's creativity as a writer that is for sure.
